Meet Waran, yoga instructor, writer, dancer, performer and all in all a very nice person. Originally from California, but living in Australia for quite a few years. I had the opportunity to work with him as part of my project for Sydney suburbs. We were shooting in Potts Point which is amazingly chilled area with spectacular views of Sydney CBD, only few steps away from gritty Kings Cross. Waran had access to roof terrace where we could see all of Sydney’s down town as the summer sun was slowly coming down, most pics in the set where shoot against this backdrop. We even got some curious visitors in form of parakeets and cockatoo looking for some snacks, looked like they’ve done it before, unfortunately we did not have any food at hand.
Photo shoot was retro themed as Waran had quite a few pieces of original clothing from early and mid 20th century such as this navy jacket and cap among other things. So here you go, again, another part of amazing city that is Sydney. Here is full set from the photo shoot.

Wedding @ Wolfies

Last weekend I did something I have not done in a while, a photo shoot for wedding. It was last minute gig with not too much preparation and planning, but still lots of fun. Quite challenging settings, all indoors with limited natural lighting, continuous rain outside and venue at maximum capacity with not much room to juggle my camera and get the right angles, but think I managed to pull it off quite OK, you can be the judge. As always, for me the most exiting part is informal banter and emotions on the day, not the formal exchange of bows, but all has its place.
look mum no hands!

What started as improbable gymnastics around old pipes in Waterloo, ended up with bike ride around balcony. Anastasia is my Waterloo model from 52 suburbs project. She’s originally from Ukraine, with 2 masters degrees, 10+ years of modelling experience and body of 18 year old. She’s fitness fanatic, that can bend her body in all kinds of random positions, 5 minutes into the shoot, Anastasia was like “I can pull my leg backwards up to my head, you want to see?” I had no time to answer, just keep on snapping.
All in all good times and a great session, besides the obligatory Waterloo landmarks and old water pipes, we also managed to squeeze in dress change and get some bored housewife looks, bike ride, and kiddie swing shot, all in about hour and a half, not bad.

Full set of pictures from the shoot can be found here.
p.s. there actually is amazing bike cum coffee shop in east London, called ‘look mum no hands!’, now every time I take a pic of someone on the bike, that is the first phrase coming to my mind, the power of branding.
Ami @ Kirribilli

It’s great when you share a house with an actress. Ami was kind enough to be my Kirribilli girl for the 52 suburbs project. Got the obligatory Opera House backdrop shot, but also a few quirky ones, I’m especially found of movement shots, as it brings lots of energy to the image.
Here’s the full set of pictures from this shoot.
Fair trade of goods

Meet Zeev, he’s from Israel, but lives in Melbourne. Our paths crossed in Vanuatu, where he invited me to drink some jasmine tea and talk about stuff. We were two of the four visitors present at Blue Pango motel, a place with lovely Korean owners, that has seen better days.
Back to Zeev (I was told it means wolf in Hebrew), at first I thought he’s just nuts, he had this stare and kept on talking and talking randomly, what he does, how he does it and why he likes it. ‘it’ is giving guitar lessons and taking nude photographs, I presume, not at the same time. The more tea we drunk and the more we talked, I realized he was no nuts at all, just weird and curious, like me, so that put me at ease.
We discussed his days in Israeli army, playing jazz for 15 years, travelling to random places, why Australia and Pacific is so expensive, how to get free stuff and meet local people when travelling. Tip: almost always you have knowledge or services, that someone will want to trade or pay for, you just have to find out what it is e.g. Zeev took local wedding photographs and gave speeches about Israel in local churches, in exchange people opened up their homes, invited him to stay, fed him, and allowed to take pictures of real Vanuatu, for free, voilà.
And then we exchanged goods, I drank his tea, he ate half of my papaya and grapefruit, he gave me 8GB of rock and roll, I gave him two Hollywood and two art house movies, and finally he left me his jar of peanut butter, but took my Dove Men body wash bottle, both were half empty. I think it was a fair trade of goods, what do you reckon?
P.s Here is sweet little island where I spent my weekend, getting sunburnt (no accessories = no sun lotion).

Those things in the background

Often, when you shoot in public places, unexpected things happen, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Swimmer pops his head next to a model (forgive the lack of focus, I got overexcited).
Dog runs in front of the model.

Or seagull might be flying really low.

That’s the beauty of photography, trying to capture magic of that moment, a point in time when things align and create a unique experience that might not ever repeat itself again, it was there and then its gone. These moments remind me why I love photography so much.
Do not park here

Whoop whoop, another great weekend in Sydney, sun is shining and models keep on coming, a bit like in Axe commercial, OK, almost. This weekend I had a great little shoot in Surrey Hills, with Ivonne, a model from Germany, we played with retro theme and used amazing variety of colourful and textured backdrops in the area, I’m a sucker for colours and Surrey Hills has plenty of them. Love it when a good plan comes together, despite 4am finish on Saturday night out (very unusual for me myself and I).
Ough, I also went out to explore local comedy club scene and have to say that it is live and kicking, everyone got abuse, if you’re fat, ugly, old, foreign or just too normal, you got it, no words spared, I forgot how raw the live comedy material can be, somewhere between jokes about Olympic gymnast with dead Siamese corpse attached and ode to the boobies, that is.
Veronika on the Rocks

I finally got to do a shoot last weekend, as the weather was lovely 20C and sunny. My feet were itchy and my finger was trigger happy, due to lack of shooting recently, but all this was compensated with great session at Balmain.
Veronika is a Czech model with plenty of catwalk experience and lots of character, just look at this. I love shoots like this, nice and simple, couple of hours, only natural light (open shadow) to give room for shadows to play, diverse and easy to reach location, is all it takes. Here’s a full set.
Finding time

Lack of time is one of the most popular excuses we all give ‘if only I had enough time to do A, B or C”. I’m no different, I use the same argument, but we also all know the truth. It is not an issue with time or lack of it, it’s about the decisions we make, choosing one thing over another (sometimes even unconsciously).
For me it is essential to find time for photography, preferably taking pictures of people although animals and great landscapes can do the job, too. It keeps my body in balance and my head sane. Some people have to run, some people have to write and some people need to construct stuff, to keep them going. And it is very important that we find time to do this, schedule an hour a day for your passion, or keep Saturday mornings clear of any other commitments to work on your passion.
Take my last week for example, after working till 9pm on Friday, the last thing I wanted to do is wake up at 7am on Saturday and go across the city to do an early morning photo shoot and scout for locations. It would have been so much nicer to sleep in and do nothing, but I made a promise to other people involved in the project that I will come, so there was no way out. Sometimes you have to trick your own brain to do stuff, but boy was I happy that I had a productive Saturday, feeding my passion for photography.
Time is never an issue, its what we do with it.
Hobbit land

As most of you may know, a little known movie “The Lord of the Rings” was shot in New Zealand, and for a good reason. Hobbit land is indeed full of serene vistas and amazing wildlife. It’s every hikers/bikers/cyclists dream come true, rough and painfully beautiful terrain with first class amenities along the way.
I would not come all the way to New Zealand to bungee jump or skydive as those are not unique experiences for this place ( I can bungee jump in my grandma’s garden), but I would definitely come to see and experience first hand all the unique landscapes and animals surrounding this island. During my short visit I still managed to do several beautiful mountain hikes and bike rides, tickle dolphins, catch a fish or two, feed an albatross, wake up a lazy seal, sunburn my nose (twice, as NZ sits under gaping ozone hole, no pic, too scary), await New Year by the ocean at 25C and eat the biggest Christmas ham ever, among other things.
Here is full set of pics from New Zealand, I’ve changed some of the photo retouching approach, to try and do justice and bring the landscapes more alive, hope it works. Happy 2011, by the way!
